(简称中大) 成立于 1963 年，是一所双语教学及融会中西文化的高等教育机构，也是全港唯一一所用书院制的高等学府，将校园生活融合于正规教育中。校园环境秀丽，山水环抱，面积达 134 公顷，是亚洲区内最优美校园之一。作为一所全国及国际公认的第一流研究型综合大学，中大致力培养高质素研究生 . 并致力保存、创造、应用及传播知识，以贡献香港、祖国以至世界各地。中大的老师曾在世界各地主要大学攻读或任教，多兼通中、英两种语文。现时校内研究生人数约有 10,074 名 ( 包括研究式及修课式课程 ) ，其中相当部份学生来自中国及世界各地。
中大研究院现正接受 2007-08 年度入学申请，大部份课程截止申请日期为 2007 年 2 月 28 日 。研究院下年度将提供 253 项课程，其中包括 109 项研究式课程及 144 项修课式课程，分别由文学院、工商管理学院、教育学院、工程学院、医学院、理学院、社会科学院及法律学院开办。研究式课程的全日制学生更可获研究生助学金作为资助， 2007-08 年度金额暂定为每月港币 12,200 至 12,800 元。
